About Alligate...
We are using a SPAM Gateway called Alligate. To determine whether the message may be spam, the spam filtering gateway performs a number of heuristic tests to look for characteristics of spam, as well as a highly efficient content analysis. Penalty points are assessed for each test failed, and for each pattern matched in the message itself. Rather than using simple bad word lists, it utilizes a complex weighting system based on years of experience in content recognition. It not only looks for words, but also for phrases, patterns, complex conditional patterns, and even placement in the message relative to other pattern matches. It will even detect and correct for intentional obfuscation of the message content.
For analysis of adult oriented content it goes even further and utilizes a proprietary algorithm designed to determine the degree of offensiveness of any particular message. This means that patterns that cause some messages to fail will pass in others. In other words, in many instances, the actual intent of the message can be determined.
Alligate calculates the total penalty scores for the message, and compares them to the scores the user has configured. The user can configure scores the scores to HOLD adult and spam messages, or KILL adult or spam messages. They can also configure a HOLD and KILL exit score which is the adult and spam score combined. The user can also configure a whitelist specifying the FROM, TO, SUBJECT or body text, any emails meeting the users criteria are not scanned for SPAM and are not given a score (they are automatically delivered).
Based on the scores the message receives Alligate will take the following actions:
1) Hold the message and inform the user that the message was received. When the user is sent a message held notice, they are informed of the type of message it is (spam or adult), who the sender is and what the subject is. The user can simply reply to the message and it is automatically retrieved and delivered to them without administrator intervention. The user can even choose to whitelist the sender so that no further messages will be blocked. Users can optionally have a Digest sent to them every four hours listing the pertinent details of all rejected messages instead of individual rejection notices.
2) The message can also be placed in the Trash. When messages are placed in the Trash directory, users are not notified.
3) If a message passes, then it is placed in the Queue directory, and the SMTP service delivers it to the proper mail server. A full queue management system is included, so that temporarily undeliverable messages are held until they can be delivered.
